The first plastic surgeon in the area was Dr. Wallace McNichol who completed his plastic surgical training at the Columbia-Presbyterian hospital in New York City The MUSC Plastic Surgery Independent Program has run continuously since July 1, 1967. The residency program provides comprehensive training in all aspects of the specialty, including clinical and basic research. One 3-year position is available each year. In addition, a six-year Plastic Surgery Integrated residency program runs simultaneously.

The Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery provides training of plastic surgery residents at Stony Brook Medicine, as an affiliated institution of the integrated six-year residency program of the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group (LIPSG) based at NuHealth (Nassau University Medical Center; NUMC) in East Meadow, NY..
